Claire is 2 months old!

It's official- Jason and I have been parents for 8 weeks now! It is incredible to think that our sweet Claire has already been here that long. At the same time, I cannot seem to remember being pregnant, much less life before she entered it and changed everything :)

I must brag a little and say that Claire is still the most amazing baby with the best disposition. She rarely cries-only if she is hungry (an easy fix since she nurses like a champ!) or bored (which is quickly fixed with a snuggle, kiss, playtime, and walk through the house). Claire is also incredibly aware of her surroundings! She loves staring at artwork on walls, intently listening to whom ever is speaking, looking for the source of any sound, and if there is light in the vicinity, she will find it! This makes for great entertainment when we take her out on the deck. Claire also enjoys spending time each day on her play mat, reading books, as well as playing with all her rattles and toys. I hope all this is sign of future intelligence :)

Claire is also sprouting in her physical abilities. She is a rock star during tummy time- that is as long as she isn't flat on floor which quickly turns into nap time :) We have resorted to tummy time on the Boppy pillow or Dad and Mom. She is quite the climber, too! She will lay on our chest and push off our hands with her legs until she makes it up as far as she can our shoulder. This climbing ability got a little scary the other day when I let her sleep on her tummy (I know- tisk, tisk! but I was in the room watching her like a hawk) and she first turned herself sideways, then shifted all the way to the edge of the couch! Needless to say, she now only naps on surfaces with walls ;) Claire spends some time each day practicing "standing" in Dad's lap, as she loves to straighten her legs.

Here is a fine example of her climbing/self positioning skills

Here is her enjoying tummy time on Dad and the Boppy pillow

Claire's personality is also exploding! She wakes up everyday in an incredible mood full of smiles and talking. She has perfected scowling (which is often the result of Daddy making silly noises), raising one eye brow (usually used to look at us like we are crazy when talking to her), and pouting (new just this week, usually followed by the sweetest whimpers). Her sweet little "talking" noises have doubled in frequency.

Here is one of our favorite videos of her :)

She has so sweetly been (kind of) sleeping through the night the last couple weeks. I say "kind of" because it is 6-7 hours at most, usually 3-4 nights a week. I will take anything over waking every 2-3 hours around the clock like she had been doing since birth. She still has yet to spend a night in her room, but has taken naps in her crib during the day. We have been using the Summer Infant "Rest Assured" sleeper when she is in our bed and the Fisher Price "Rock N' Play" sleeper in the living room- both of which I highly recommend.

Overall, parenthood has been the most wonderful gift I could have ever received! I have grown and learned more about myself during this short time than I would have ever imagined. It is amazing to look at our sweet little girl and know that she is truly a piece of us, something we created. The level of selflessness, patience, and love that goes into everyday with her has made us truly appreciate what a blessing and miracle life truly is. We are looking forward to continuing to watch her grow and conquer this new world she has blessed with her presence :)

Claire's Birth Story

Now that Claire is 6 weeks old, I figure it is time to share her birth story :)

The real reason this has come back to the front of my mind is because I am going to my first follow up appointment tomorrow! I am so excited to get signed off and released to return to normal life. Well, not exactly normal, as I plan to start an exercise regimen STAT. I have been very blessed to have most of the baby weight fall off, but I would like to tighten specific areas and build some endurance back up.

Here is the story:

On Tuesday 2/7 at 3 am, her actual due date, I started to feel contractions that were distinctly different from the persistent Braxton Hick's I had been experiencing. They started coming every 30 minutes, then 20 minutes, then every 10 minutes. This continued until 5:15am when I finally decided it was time to call the doctor. She said I should stay home until my contractions reach 5-7 minutes apart. As bummed as I was, I am happy I made the call instead of just heading to the hospital. By 8am, my contractions had slowed to every 15-20 minutes, I was so bummed that things had slowed and decided to go back to bed to get some rest.

That afternoon I woke up and had lunch while the contraction continued at about 1-4/hour. I decided it was time to take things into my own hands and help coax things along :) We went to Sermon Center where I decided to do 1 1/2 miles on the elliptical, hoping that the rocking motion might help things along. Unfortunately, there was no change in my contractions. I wasn't about to give up, so we spent the night running errands- stopped at Subway for dinner, went to Best Buy to get new phones, then walked Walmart (as they were the only place open that late and it was to cold to walk outside). We arrived back home at 11pm and my contractions quickly increased to every 6-8 minutes for 45 minutes! I was so excited thinking I had won and this was it, but, much to my dismay, my contractions spaced back out to every 8-30 minutes and I decided at midnight to go to bed L

A very short TWO hours later, I woke up at 2am to a very PAINFUL contraction! I was so frustrated at this point and just assumed I was being teased again and tried to get back to sleep. Much to my surprise, the contractions started gradually increasing- coming every 7-14 minutes. I let myself get excited/hopeful that this could be it, and decided at 3am to get in the shower. That is when the contractions really hit, now coming every 3-8 minutes-they were much harder and stronger! I got out, got ready (even did my hair), and told Jason it was time to get ready, we needed to go to the hospital :)

We arrived at the hospital at 5:30am and they did my first check, deciding I was dilated 4cm, 70% effaced. I was slightly disappointed hoping for more progress and crossing my fingers I wouldn't be sent home. The overnight doctor decided to go ahead and have me admitted at 6:30am. I was transferred to a room and they wasted no time (as it was coming up quickly on change of shift) getting a saline locked IV started and labs drawn.

At 7am I was able to meet Abby, whom in my opinion, is the most incredible labor and delivery nurse ever! She brought in a birthing ball, discussed my plan of care, as well as reviewed by birth plan that she said she was in full support of. That was a huge weight lifted, as my biggest fear was being judged and cared for by people I had annoyed before they even met us.

After she left the room, I was able to close my eyes and even fall asleep for an hour. At 9am I woke back up, but I was unfortunately starving! I had opted to go without an IV, so it was up to me to keep myself nourished and hydrated. I spent the next hour eating crackers, drinking water, and pacing the room, and rubbing my back, through contractions . I also spent 30 minutes bouncing on the birthing ball.

At 10am, Abby returned to help me back in bed to do 15 minutes of fetal monitoring and do another check. Much to our surprise, I had progressed to 7cm dilated, 100% effaced, but my water had somehow still not broke . Abby decided it was time to call Dr. Steiner and make sure she would be at the hospital soon, and her reply was that she would be there within the hour and we would break my water to move things along!

At 10:30 my Dad, brother David, and my Mom arrived to visit for a few minutes and wish us well. On a side note, I must say, the lack of allowing visitors during my labor is a huge part of what gave me the strength and level head to concentrate and make it through without an epidural. We chose to keep the lighting down, TV off, and door shut to maintain a peaceful environment, as well as use a saline locked IV and intermittent fetal monitoring to allow me to remain mobile and not spend my labor on my back in bed.

By 11:15 the doctor had arrived and we were ready to get things going. She came in and broke my water, which was quite the experience! First of all, I was so relieved when they were able to tell me that the fluid looked great and there was no staining- a huge occupational hazard fear! I honestly had no idea just how much there would be or that it would continue to slowly trickle for so long. At that point I also decided I was ready to start a bag IV fluids to help with hydration.

At noon I decided I was desperate to get back in bed to get some rest and took a half dose of Nubain, a mild pain medication. At 12:30, Abby returned to check in on me and we decided to go ahead and do another cervical check. I was now at 9.5cm dilated and 100% effaced. Abby suggested I move to a hands and knees position to try and dilate my anterior cervix, as that was the only area left to go. After maintaining that for about 15 minutes, I moved to side/tummy position to finish dilation and get some rest.

At 2 pm, after some much needed rest, Abby returned to do another check. At this point I was so excited to hear that I was fully dilated and effaced. She called Dr. Steiner in for a double check. The doctor agreed with my progress, but feared Claire had rotated. She suggested we do a few practice pushes to see if we were ready to go, but they confirmed that Claire had in fact rotated and was lying sunny side up L I had been having pretty intense back pain most of the day, which I now found out had been back labor! Both the nurse and doctor were surprised how well I had tolerated that pain. We all discussed the options and decided to reposition me to attempt to get Claire to rotate.

I spent the next half hour in bed, in the most awkward position I had ever been in. Jason was so sweet, he bravely spent the whole time in bed with me massaging my back and giving encouraging pep talks. At 2:40pm Abby came back in to check and see if she had rotated. She proceeded with a scary "be prepared" conversation- typically, mothers are not able to endure the pain of pushing a baby out in this position; they feared I would tire out and require an emergent c-section. We were all crossing our fingers as she she checked Claire's position- she had turned! I thought I had felt quite a bit of movement, which was far less than comfortable- there is no feeling like a baby moving inside you without amniotic fluid.

At this point, I could feel pressure, but not the urge to push. This was true for much of late active labor for me. I was incredibly fearful of the pain I would experience choosing to deliver without an epidural. I was shocked by the true power of adrenaline (and the many other natural components of pain control)! I was able to use breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and (thanks to Jason and Abby) massage for pain control. This combination, with a whole lot of mind over matter, got me through the process fairly comfortably.

Abby went ahead and called in the doctor, and what seemed like an army, to begin preparing the room for Claire's arrival. By 3:05pm, I was ready to start to pushing. My contractions at this point were still 5 minutes apart, as they remained throughout my whole labor. That made pushing a little more tedious, working hard pushing three times, making progress, only to sit back and wait several minutes before I could try again. I had pushed for about about 30 minutes, they had saw Claire's head crowning with last several pushes, when much to everyone's surprise, Claire got the hiccups! Everyone else in the room took great pleasure in laughing and enjoying watching my belly bounce with each hiccup. For me, it was a much different experience :( It was the most painful part, that is until I actually delivered Claire! The pain was so incredibly intense, but luckily, very short lived.

Ten sets of three pushes each and 49 minutes later, Claire was here! She was quickly wiped off and went straight to my chest where she lay wide eyed. The doctor coached Jason while he cut the cord and the nurses stepped in to check her out. She wouldn’t cry (which is still her norm), but she had great color and bright red lips. She was so wide eyed!

Jason and I spent the next half hour alone with Claire cuddling and getting to know her. The nurse then came back in to give her initial shots and bath. After they were done and she was dressed, we welcomed our families in to meet our sweet bundle of joy!

Claire's hospital bath

This is a video of Claire's bath at the hospital tonight. She was very alert and in the video you get to see how calm she is during bath time, hear her little grunts, and see how she some times gets a little cross eyed. :)

Holidays and 2012

It has been quite some time since our last blog post, but hopefully the first word of the title explains it all!

We had a wonderful, very busy, family filled holiday season.

We started November off with a bang, as we had the pleasure of being there as my sister welcomed our sweet nephew Rylan. I will be making a separate Aunt-bragging post in his regards :)

I had the pleasure of working Thanksgiving, but didn't let that slow us down in traditions. We had a great dinner Thanksgiving day with the Dodd family, followed by a second meal we hosted with my Mom and siblings. It was our first time hosting a holiday meal, and it went great overall. My brother was generous enough to cook the turkey and ham so I didn't have to worry about heavy lifting in and out of the oven.

Christmas was even better, as we were able to spend so much extra time with the Kent family. David, Brittany, and Owen were able to fly home for a couple of weeks which made the holiday all that much more special to all be together. We filled our time with family dinners, a ladies outing to The Nutcracker, baking/frosting what felt like 100 sugar cookies, and attending the Kent extended family get together for the first time a couple years. We also had some great quality time with my extended Dodd family on Christmas Eve, as well as spending Christmas morning opening gifts and enjoying the breakfast buffet my Dad prepared. I then volunteered to ring in the New Year at work (who could pass up time and half with maternity leave around the corner) while Jason spent the evening with his family.

We were also very blessed to have three baby showers in honor of little Claire's arrival. My sister-in-law, Kristen, hosted one in November, two great friends from work, Andrea H. and Andrea M. hosted one in December, and my sister, Shandi, hosted one in January. It was so wonderful to get to spend such quality time preparing for Claire's arrival with family and friends. I can definitely say that we are overwhelmed and beyond blessed by the amazing generosity of everyone :)

As for 2012 so far...

We started January out with celebrating Jason's birthday. Tradition landed us at Gojo's for a birthday dinner, followed by taking him to cinema suites for the first time (the only way to go to the movies 8 months pregnant), then had family over for desserts to celebrate. The following week was spent celebrating our 4th wedding anniversary. We had an amazing time spending one last overnight outing just the two of us (at least for a while) on the Plaza. We stayed at Sheraton Suites, had an incredible dinner at Brio, saw a movie, and headed to The Melting Pot for dessert.

Here are some pictures from our celebrations:

In other news, probably the most anticipated- I am officially 39 1/2 weeks pregnant! This picture was 3 weeks ago- we took some tonight that I will share soon.

I truly never thought I would make it this far along, seeing as how everyone around us seems to give birth in the 36-38 weeks range, and especially considering our concerns just a few weeks ago of incredibly intense Braxton Hicks. With my line of work though, I truly count my carrying to full term a blessing :) I can honestly say I still feel great, too! I know, this is the last thing any pregnant or previously pregnant women want to hear... But with the exception of fatigue/leg aches at the end of working the weekend (yup, I am still working two 12 hour shifts back to back), newly developed reflux, all of my shirts being waayyy to short, and interrupted sleep due to frequent bathroom visits, I am feeling just the same as usual.

Over the last week, I have started going to great lengths to help coax our little lady into arriving- Jason and I have walked miles (no kidding in just how plural that is), done a hip/hop dance cardio workout every other day, spent countless hours on the exercise ball, ran stairs, cleaned to whole house, and consumed every "labor inducing" food/beverage (except black cohosh- I am not even sure what that is).

Needless to say, none of this stuff works! Our sweet little Claire must have a plan of her own, and we are just going to (attempt to) patiently await her arrival. We do go in for our 40 week appointment on Monday and will discuss plans for a possible induction if she tries to wait to long.

Well, that is the official highlight reel of the last few months. I will also post some pictures soon of Claire's adorable nursery that is pretty much complete. Hopefully, a birth announcement won't be to far off, either :)

October

I have to start by mentioning that fall is by far my favorite season of the year, a close second is spring. There are few things more beautiful than a foggy cool morning with crisp orange and red leaves on the ground. Plus, Jason and I both have quite a love for lightweight sweaters, long sleeves, and jackets! Lastly, you cannot beat a fall treat- I cannot begin to tell you how much hot cocoa, apples, and apple cider have been consumed in this home. I also seem to get the baking bug every fall. This month we had chocolate pancakes from scratch, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, and brownies.

October was slightly biploar this year, in the fact that had just as many "summer" days mixed in with "fall" days. I can't complain though, it allowed some extra time to get a few much needed thing done around the outside of the house before we begin hibernation.

We started the month out by celebrating our niece Aubrey's fourth birthday! It was so much fun to watch her pure joy as she finally had a party in her honor. She was a wonderful host and did a great job dressing the part of guest of honor! She even had earrings for all the female guests in attendance to wear :) I now know all this stems from "Fancy Nancy". We all enjoyed pizza for dinner and a delicious cake homemade by Kristen.

Our next big event was Shandi's baby shower. It was so much fun getting to host a shower for her and our nephew! We had an incredible turn out of 14 guests, which all cozied up in our living room for games, food (including a chocolate fountain), and gifts! The games included "Playdough Babies", "What is that Poo?", and "How big is Mama?". Everyone seemed to have a great time! Shandi and Rylan were blessed with many of the necessities left to still purchase. It still amazes how much stuff such a little person needs.

The same weekend as the baby shower, we also celebrated two more birthdays. Heidi, my brother wonderful girlfriend, was first. We spent an evening roaming through a cornmaze, enjoyed a hayride, then headed to Logan's for her favorite steak dinner. Monday night, we celebrated Shauna, Jason's mom and my amazing mother-in-law's, birthday! We had a delicious taco dinner at home followed by gift opening and a sampling of desserts- frosted sugar cookies, brownies, and angel food cake smothered in strawberries and whipped cream.

Lastly on the celebration list, we hosted a wonderful Halloween party! We slacked off the last two years and hadn't hosted, but were back up and running this year when we realized we will have a little princess with a bedtime next year that will make hosting a challenge :) We also enjoy the fact that we have a TON of trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood! We spent the evening handing out candy, cooking hotdogs on the grill, roasting marshmallows and making s'mores over a backyard bonfire, and (for some) watching the Chiefs game. It was so much fun getting to spend time with family- watching Aubrey really enjoyed the trick-or-treating concept for the first time and seeing most everyone dressed up in costume.

We are now looking forward to another great fall month in November with Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season! We will also be making further preparations for our princess as we do our 3D ultrasound, bump up the frequency of my appointments, and start looking into all those fun parenting/birth classes.

September

September was a nice calm break from the fun filled/at times chaotic month of August. There was much sleeping in, procrastinating house projects, and dreaming of our sweet baby!

We started the month off with a great family get together at Kristen's and Steve's home in honor of Labor Day. It was great to spend the day relaxing with family, enjoying wonderful BBQ (my compliments to Chef David and Kristen), playing bocce ball/badmitten in the backyards evening shade, and spending time with David, Brittney, and Owen before they made their adventure back to Idaho for school. We also of course had to attend Santecaligon in true Independence, MO fashion :) We now know the booth set up for the most part and are able to make quick time of our visits by visiting our favorites: best kettle corn and funnel cake. We can never resist walking through the large craft tents, always thinking there is going to be something new that we can't resist. We again left with a solo bag of kettle corn :)

Other than my aforementioned procrastination and daydreaming, we filled our time with several date nights. As excited as we are to become a family of three, we are also trying to cram in all the things that will prove challenging with a baby. We ate Mongolian BBQ twice and have been going to the movies. Two which we highly recommend are Moneyball and The Help. In other "prepare to bid farewell to life as we know it" preparations, I have also resisted picking on Jason for his sleep pattern: stay up all night and sleep until noon (at least) everyday. I know these days are numbered for him :)

Jason has also spent this month playing on his first softball team! This is a Dodd family tradition that goes back to my childhood. I have such great memories of spending weekends covered in dust playing at the softball fields while my dad and uncles all played. Now, it is on to the next generation! On this team is my Dad, Brother David, Cousin Joey, and of course Jason mixed with a group of friends. They did great considering it was their first season playing together as a team. I am looking forward to spring softball and starting the tradition of bringing our little one to watch dad play :)

Finally, in the best news of the month, we had our ultrasound! We found out our wishes came true and we have been blessed with a baby GIRL! Beyond that, she is an incredibly active and healthy bundle of joy. The ultrasound tech took extra care knowing that I am a NICU nurse to show me every detail of her adorable anatomy and address all of my biggest fears. I can finally sleep peacefully :) We wasted no time in spoiling her, heading straight from our appointment to Buy Buy Baby to register and Babies R' Us to purchase her first outfits. That evening we had family over to enjoy Chinese carryout and homemade fortune cookies to reveal the exciting news!

Here are the rest of the pictures of dinner and to watch my belly grow:

We are beyond excited to now be able to dream of the life we plan to make as family with our sweet baby girl! Now on to distracting ourselves until her arrival with a fun-filled fall. October will bring baby showers for Shandi, birthdays, and Halloween fun :)

August

August was a wonderful month for us- full of adventure and family!
We started the month out with a wonderful evening spent on the plaza for my Dad's birthday. A visit to Brio Tuscan Grill (where we ordered at least one of every food item on the happy hour menu!) followed by delicous dessert on the patio at The Cheesecake Factory.

We then jet setted our way to Key West! We had an amazing time! We stayed at a quaint bed and breakfast just blocks from downtown . We spent the first couple days touring the whole island and visiting museums via the Old Towne Trolley. Each night we mixed things up with an adventure outing. The first was a haunted ghost tour- it ended up quite theatric, but still very entertaining. Our second night was by far the most amazing- we took a private biplane tour at sunset! The views were absolutely breathtaking and the plane gorgeous on its own. The third day we set out on our rented bicycles to adventure on our own. We ended up at a lighthouse and toured a retired US Coast Guard ship before making our to Lobsterfest, where we enjoyed a great lobster tail dinner. That nights adventure was a sunset kayak eco-tour. It was so wonderful to be out on the water in the quiet of the night. Our guide was highly educated regarding the activity of the birds and marine life, making sure we didnt miss a thing. The next day we biked to the beach for some fun in the sun and toured a small fort right on the water. We spent that evening enjoying sunset cruise on a beautful replica schooner. It was so great to be out on water for the first time! We ended off our last day with a snorkel adventure, which we were told was a must see since Key West has the only living reef in the US. Well, I am here to tell you that unless this is your first snorkel trip, you will be disappointed. I could just be bitter due to the fact that I became close friends with a jellyfish, but, truly, the only marine life we saw were a nurse shark and stingrays. We ended off the night with a visit to Mallory Square for sunset celebration, which is a collection of street performers entertaining crowds with the sunset as their backdrop :)

Here is the link to look at all of the pictures:

We returned to Missouri to let the excitement continue as we jumped right into helping with the finishing touches for David and Brittney's wedding. They had a beautiful Saturday morning as the backdrop for their St. Louis Temple ceremony, followed by an adventure back to Independence for their reception that evening. It was so wonderful to be able to spend time with the entire Kent family together!

Here is the rest of the pictures:

We had an amazing month: perfect babymoon vacation and a wonderful time spending the month filled with family and friends! We are now looking forward to fall and all the great adventures it will bring :)
